William Hannon

October 7, 1928 — June 21, 2016

Hannon, William R (Bill), 87, retired Wichita Police Captain went to be with his Lord on June 21. Memorial service will be held at Westwood Presbyterian, 8007 W Maple on Sat, July 2, 11:00 am. Our family lost a hero and our dear friend. He was a role model, teacher, and protector. He taught us how to live with love, kindness, and joy. He instilled high morals, a strong work ethic, and love for family and God. He loved people and was a stranger to no one. Bill was born in Wichita to Thelma and Floyd Hannon. He graduated from East High, completed his Bachelor of Science/Admin of Justice at WSU. He joined the WPD and advanced through the ranks retiring as Captain. He formed the first narcotic section in 1972; also commanded the dectective and training sections before retiring in 1983. A lifelong member of Bester G Brown Lodge #433, 32nd degree mason, Wichita Midian Shrine and a member of Westwood Presbyterian Church. Bill and his family started the Picket Fence in Old Town in 1994 and assisted in its operation until closing in 2008. He and his wife of 65 yrs had a 2nd home in South Fork CO. For many yrs, they spent their summers exploring the mtns, fly fishing, square dancing, and entertaining friends/family. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Jeanne L (Sommers) Hannon and his brother, Floyd. Survirors include: daughter Cherl Jackson; son, Michael Hannon, spouse Randy Carter;daughter Kristine Merten, spouse Richard; 5 grandchildren: Derrick (Missy) Jackson, Donovan (Michelle) Hannon, Ryan (Sheri) Hannon, Ashley (Clif) Beck, Chad (Natalie) Merten, and 15 great grandchildren.
