Virginia "Ginny" Libel

July 30, 1935 — June 13, 2019

Virginia Dawn Libel, age 83, went to meet her Lord on Thursday, June 13, 2019. Virginia was born July 30, 1935, in Colwich, Kansas. Shortly after graduating high school at the age of 17, she and Herman Libel were married on June 21, 1953. They welcomed their first child, Paul, in 1956, Nancy in 1958, Chris in 1960 and Mark in 1962.

When Virginia was 7, she and her 8 siblings were received into the Wichita Children’s Home. They were cared for there until Virginia (age 8) and two biological brothers, Jay and Clifford, were adopted by Wilbur and Florence Powell. They were raised with adopted siblings Lucy, Doris, and Lucy’s daughter, Florence. Her remaining six biological siblings were adopted by other families, with whom Virginia was able to make contact later in life.

During her youth she enjoyed playing string bass in the orchestra at Planeview High School. While in high school, she met Herman Libel at the skating rink, where they participated in skate dancing competitions.

In 1952, Virginia began attending First Bible Baptist Church (now MorningStar) and shortly thereafter she placed her trust in Christ and was baptized. A few years later, Herman trusted Christ as well and they began serving in the church. She was the nursery superintendent for 40 years and she and Herman made many missions trips to Mexico over the years. She continued to serve and faithfully attend MorningStar Church as long as she was able, serving in Awana, helping with Christmas candy for the children at church and funeral dinners.

For 35 years, Virginia was a much-beloved daycare provider and stayed in contact with many of her charges over the years. She loved sewing, baking and jewelry making, especially in her later years. During their marriage, Herman and Virginia had the joy of vacationing to all 50 states. After 47 years of marriage, her beloved Herman went to be with the Lord.

When Virginia eventually moved to Regent Park in January 2017, the nurses said she became “the glue that held the community together.” She was instrumental in starting a church service held there every Sunday afternoon. Virginia and her friends spent hours playing Scrabble and different board games. She made friends with everyone there and will be sorely missed at Regent.

Virginia is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Herman G. Libel; her parents, Wilbur and Florence Powell; brothers, David, Jay, Clifford and Frank; sisters, Lucy Logan and Doris Keogh; and infant grandson Chris.

She is survived by her son, Paul (Julie); daughter Nancy (David) Law; son Chris (Tami); and son Mark; sisters, Marilyn, Judith, Jeanie and Shirley; grandchildren, Ryan Libel (Michael Moss), Nicole (Derek) Hale, Kristen (Lane) Doty, Jeremy (Kristy) Law, Eric (Julie) Law, Tiffany Libel, Jake (Amber) Libel; great-grandchildren, Abigail, Rebeccah, Natalie, Isabella, Greyson, Tallis and Cecilia Hale; Landon, Hudson, Paxton and Kensington Doty; Emma and Jackson Law; Madox, Sophia, Adison and Nolan Law; Braden James; Andrew Libel and many more who called her Mom or Grandma.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 18, 2019, from 6-8 pm at Broadway Mortuary. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at 1:30 pm at MorningStar Community Church.
