Tom Simpson

August 17, 1920 — November 2, 2015

Tom A. Simpson, 95, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2015 after a brief illness. A memorial service will be held 1:30 Saturday at Broadway Mortuary, 1147 S Broadway in Wichita. Tom was born August 17, 1920 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Thomas and Elizabeth (Greenhorn) Simpson. After high school he worked for The Bank of Montreal until 1939 when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force where he served until 1945. After the war Tom was working for the Canadian National Railway when he met Helen Jean Shaning. They were married in Winnipeg in 1948. In 1954 they moved their growing family to warmer Wichita where Tom worked briefly for the railroad before becoming an expert grease maker at Southwest Grease and Oil. Tom retired in 1982 but kept active well into his 90s with his hobbies and grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing trips to Creede, Colorado, touring Scotland, league bowling, gardening, tinkering, endless experiments with bread recipes and personal fitness. In recent years he enjoyed his regular visits to the Health Strategies Fitness Center where he had many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert, sister, Helen Cassidy and daughter-in-law, Cathleen (Barry). Survivors include Helen, his wife of 67 years, children; Thomas of Ft Worth, TX, Barry of Tucson, AZ, Karen (Matthew Stephen) Copeland of Wichita, Brian (Karen Gertsen) of Wichita, Glenn (Carol) of Wichita, Grandchildren; Katie (Andrew) Vienot of Oklahoma City, James Copeland of Manhattan, KS, Will Simpson of Wichita and Ryan Simpson of Tucson, AZ. Memorial contributions can be made to the Down Syndrome Support Group of Wichita.
