Shelby Smith

March 30, 1960 — January 4, 2016

Smith, Shelby Kent, 55, died of heart failure on January 4, 2016, in Longmont, CO. Kent attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School and Kapaun Mount Carmel High School (class of ’79) where he played football, basketball, and was the State Champion runner-up in tennis. Kent was also awarded the National Hallmark Award for his artwork. Attending Kansas University from 1980 to 1984, he received his BS degree in Personnel Administration. Best known for his carefree, easy-going nature, Kent was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and held offices as House Manager and Historian.

In addition to recent renovations of homes, Kent volunteered his construction talent for non-profit organizations including Habitat for Humanity and Boulder Community Gardens. While working at the Community Gardens in Boulder, CO, he was rewarded volunteer of the year. Prior employment also included: Ski Instructor in Breckenridge, CO, Job Service Representative in Frisco, CO, Head Tennis Counselor for Cimarroncita Ranch Camp in New Mexico, and Inspector for the Kansas Dept. of Revenue in Topeka.

Kent loved the many activities of the Smith Family Reunions spanning 33 years. He was also an enthusiastic, adventurous traveler to other destinations such as Cancun, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel for scuba diving… while deep sea fishing off the coast of Hilton Head he landed a 130 pound Tarpon!

Kent resided in Longmont, CO, and is survived by his parents, Betty and Shelby Smith of Wichita; his siblings, Leslee Campbell (Nick) of Denver, CO, Liz Jackson of Denver, CO, Skip Smith (Kim) of Ridgewood, NJ, and Stratton Smith (Kristi) of Boulder, CO. Memorials have been established with The Lord’s Diner and The Center of Hope. A Rosary will be held at 6:30 pm on Thursday, January 21st, with a Memorial Mass at 11:00 am on Friday, January 22nd; both at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
