Sandra "Sandy" Peer

March 5, 1953 — July 18, 2019

Sandra “Sandy” K. Becker Peer, 66, was born March 5, 1953, in McPherson Kansas. She saw Jesus face-to-face on July 18, 2019. She is survived by her husband, Rodney, of 46 years, two daughters Melissa (Brian) Scapa of Wichita and Katie (Eric) Agard of Wichita, and 12 grandchildren: Nicolas Scapa, Elliana Scapa, Caleb Scapa, Jacob Scapa, Elaina Agard, Jonathan Agard, Elizabeth Agard, Eleanora Agard, Benjamin Agard, Emelia Agard, Evelina Agard, and Michael Agard. She is also survived by her three “double-cousins/siblings” Duane (Sharon) Becker of Olathe, Stuart (Donna) Becker of Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, and Kim (Lewis) Thomas of Wichita.

Sandy and her double-cousins/siblings had a rather unique upbringing. They all considered themselves to have two moms and two dads; their identical twin sister mothers married brothers! They were a family of 8 and spent most of their lives together either in McPherson or on the farm in McPherson County.

Sandy went to Lincoln Elementary, Park Elementary, McPherson Junior High School, and McPherson High School, graduating in 1971. Sandy attended University of Kansas and Washburn University, graduating with a degree in mathematics in 1975. That same year, she also received her license to teach. She earned her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Wichita State University. She taught math and/or math education since 1975, retiring in May 2019. Her first teaching assignment was a two-building assignment -- Highland Park High School and Topeka High School in Topeka, Kansas. After moving to Wichita, she taught at Curtis Junior High School (now a middle school) from 1976 – 1978. She taught at Northwest High School from 1978 until 2007 when she began teaching full-time at Wichita State University. She made numerous presentations at national, state, and local math conferences and was honored with several teaching awards throughout her career. Sandy was nationally board certified in adolescent and young adulthood mathematics.

In addition to teaching, she enjoyed singing in the choir, hosting family gatherings and brunches for friends, cooking and baking. Her priorities were devotion to God and being a wife, mother, grandmother, instructor, and friend. Relationships were important to her. She was involved with formal and informal mentoring at church and school.

Family and friends looked forward to “second Sunday dinners.” This monthly gathering brought Sandy love, joy, laughter, and fulfillment. Her heart smiled to see the family enjoy being together and to eat whatever was on the menu.

“Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.” Psalm 16:5-6
