Roger Roller

April 30, 1923 — June 14, 2016

Roger Wayne Roller passed away on June 14, 2016. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Rae Roller. Roger Roller was born on April 30th, 1923 in Cleveland, Oklahoma. After one year of college, he enlisted in the Army, joining the 269th Infantry Battalion and served for three years during World War II in France and Germany. After the Army, he went to Columbia University where he earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in Music Education, and continued to earn another 60 hours of postgraduate credit. Mr. Roller taught school for 31 years in Wichita Kansas at Truesdell Jr. High, Wichita South High School, and Wilbur Jr. High School. He was a professional oboist and played Principal Oboe in the Oklahoma City, Dallas, Buffalo and Wichita Symphony Orchestras. He was the co-conductor of the Wichita Junior Youth Symphony Orchestra, and was the Choir Director of the Meridian Avenue Baptist Church for over 12 years. Roger loved sports, especially tennis, which he played all his life. After his retirement, he became an exceptional pickle ball player, and won many medals for his tournament play and participation in the Senior Olympics. He was a devoted Christian, and enjoyed sharing his faith by teaching a Bible class at Meridian Avenue Baptist Church for many years. His devotion also demonstrated itself in his charity work including a ministry to shut-ins through the Meals on Wheels program, which he strongly recommends to active retirees. Roger Roller is survived by his brother Dale; his children, Richard and Krista Roller of Kansas City; Anne and Don Johnson of Morro Bay, California; Sherrie and Mark Richey of Anchorage, Alaska; Randy and Nina Roller of Dallas, Texas; eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A service celebrating his life will be held at the Meridian Avenue Baptist Church in Wichita on July 16th at 10:00. Donations in his honor may be directed to the Meridian Avenue Baptist Church Youth Ministries or Youth Horizons of Wichita. Arrangements by Broadway Mortuary.
