Robert D. Spurrier, Jr. (Robin), 80, loving husband, father, and friend went to be with the Lord on May 24th. Robin was born in Wichita, July 6, 1943, to Dale and Mary Spurrier.
Robin is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Jane, children Wendy Spurrier, Los Angeles, and John Spurrier, Wichita, and his two sisters, Karen O’Neal, Crested Butte, and Marcia Ryel, Wichita, and their families. He was a special Uncle Robin to many Nieces and Nephews.
After graduating from Wichita East High School in 1961, he attended Oklahoma University and Wichita University. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity.
During college in Wichita, he joined the family business, Spurrier Chemical Companies. Originally in sales, he worked his way up to become a partner of the company, and later President and CEO. During Robin’s tenure the company opened a division in Mold, England. This began many trips to the UK and Europe. On one of his trips to Paris, Jane joined him, and they toured the beaches of Normandy.
Family was very important to Robin. They took many trips to Colorado and throughout the United States. One specific trip John remembers is the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial.
Besides his family and business, Robin had many interests and was very active in the Wichita community.
Robin was dedicated to his church, St. James Episcopal, where he served on the Vestry and helped in preparation for the Sunday Morning Breakfasts. He became the steward of the American flag on the church’s front lawn.
In 1965, Robin built his first sports car, an MGA, with the help of two of his friends. As a member of the Sports Car Club of America, he competed in different race cars at various courses in a span of 10 years. His last race car was a Lola T70 that he purchased from the actor James Garner. After retiring from racing, Robin kept active in the local collector car scene with his 1955 Thunderbird and later his 1956 Buick.
Robin was a long-time member of the Wichita Wagonmasters. He held numerous positions including the Windwagon Pilot and Captain. He was chosen as Admiral Windwagon XXVII in 2000. Robin did not serve in the military but loved his country. He volunteered many civic hours in the Air Force, both locally and nationally. This included traveling and touring many installations. In 2003, he was honored as the first recipient of the Golden Eagle Award for outstanding support of McConnell Air Force Base. Robin was also a long-time supporter and board member of the Kansas Aviation Museum.
