Nick Wheeler, M.D., 73, retired Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon, died at home on February 15, 2022 following multiple chronic medical conditions.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, February 24 at RiverWalk Church of Christ, 225 N. Waco. Interment will be in Peace Creek Cemetery, in western Kansas.
Nick was born on August 1, 1948 in Altus, Oklahoma to Leona and P.R. Wheeler, M.D. They moved to Wichita, Kansas in 1956. In 1966, Nick graduated from Wichita North High School. He graduated Cum Laude from Oklahoma Christian College and University of Kansas School of Medicine. There he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed a General Surgery residency at St. Francis Hospital and a Plastic Surgery residency at KU Medical Center. He was in private practice in Wichita from 1980-2009. He originated the St. Joseph Medical Center Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic. Following his retirement, he taught Advanced Chemistry, Biology, and Anatomy and Physiology at Trinity Academy. He participated in medical mission services in Tanzania, East Africa; Jamaica; Belize; and Guatemala.
He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, having served as a deacon and a frequent Bible class teacher. A memorial has been established with the RiverWalk Church of Christ Missions Fund.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jerry Wheeler. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Linda Young Wheeler; sons, Jeffrey Wheeler and Jeremy Wheeler, both of Wichita; brothers, Bob (Linda) Wheeler of Edmond, Oklahoma, Jay Wheeler and Joe Wheeler of Texas; and sister, Frances Wyatt of Oklahoma City; and 5 nieces and nephews.
