Margaret “Midge” A. O’Neil’s beautiful and inspiring life ended on July 28, 2023. She was 80 years old. She was born on May 2, 1943 in Tulsa, OK, the daughter of Robert F. and Lura Margaret (Robbins) Walters.
Midge graduated from East High School in Wichita, Kansas, then went on to complete her Bachelor's of Arts Degree from the University of Kansas in 1965. She completed her Master’s Degree in Education at Wichita State University in 1996. She loved children and taught students with learning disabilities and behavioral challenges for several years at Sedgwick High School.
In her earlier years, Midge was an accomplished swimmer and competed at the National level. She also started the synchronized swim team in Wichita with her best friend and coached for many years. More recently she enjoyed tennis, skiing with her grandchildren, nurturing her flowers, playing with her beloved dog, Haven, and traveling.
Midge valued her family above all and was affectionately known as “Mama Midge.” She was a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, neighbor, tennis partner, teacher and friend. Her thoughtful and generous approach toward life inspired many. Having been through several challenges in her life, her resiliency and toughness were admirable. Midge had a special gift to bring family and people together. This was evidenced by the Walters Family Gatherings that she hosted at her house. She also had a goal of making memories with her grandchildren which is exactly what she did. Midge touched the lives of so many and will be missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dr. Jack R. O’Neil and infant son David. Her son, Michael J. O’Neil also passed on July 28, 2023. She is survived by her three sisters; Suzanne Walters (Denver, CO), Virginia Henderson (St. Louis, MO), and Roberta Buchanan (Scottsdale, AZ). She is also survived by her two children: Margaret “Peggy” O’Neil Sawyer and husband Brian (Boise, ID) and Dr. Patrick W. O’Neil and wife Sara (Camdenton, MO) and eleven grandchildren: Brayden, Margaret “Maggie”, Molly, Elesha, Ava, Eli, Layla Jack, Grant, Margaret “Mae”, and Brynn.
