Max Ray Tully was born on June 1, 1932 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to parents, Louis M. and Una Ann (Whitted) Tully. Max was the youngest of eight children; L.M. Jr., Gene, Willa, Betty, Carl, Jack, Fay, and Max. Max’s father, Louis M., worked for the Railroad Express and the family moved several times between Shawnee, OK and Arkansas City, KS during Max’s formative years. Una passed away when Max was only four and a half years old. Max discovered early in life that hard work and a stick-to-it attitude would result in great opportunities. He graduated from Shawnee High School on May 25, 1950, after which he began work at his first job as a caddy at a golf course. His next job was to run the elevator at the bank. In 1951, Max moved to Wichita where he worked briefly at one of the aircraft manufacturing plants before landing what would be his life career at Southwestern Bell. His first position at Southwestern Bell was in installation. Max met and married his beautiful bride, Jeanne Coley on December 1, 1952. Within a week of the marriage ceremony, Max who served in the army at that time, was sent to France. Upon Max’s return from overseas he and Jeanne began a series of adventures that would culminate into a beautiful life. Max returned to Southwestern Bell. For the first 18 years of marriage the young couple enjoyed breeding dachshunds. Jeanne worked as a legal secretary at the time as well. On one occasion after Max was reviewing their income versus expenses he stated “We need to sell some of these dachshunds because you are working just to support them at this point!” In 1970 they welcomed their only child, Gregory Wayne Tully on May 26. The little family always had a family pet dachshund but their focus broadened to raising other animals such as; chickens, guineas, pheasant, quail, turkeys, rare white peacocks and ducks. Max loved gardening, woodworking, collecting pennies and tinkering in the garage. His favorite movie was Sergeant York featuring Jimmy Stuart. His favorite song was “I’ll Be With You in Apple Blossom Time” by The Andrews Sisters. Max retired from Southwestern Bell after an impressive 35 years. He and Jeanne celebrated many years of marriage and last December 1, 2016 celebrated 64 years together. He had an ornery spirit mixed with a love of classic big band music and movies. He loved Doris Day movies and you could often hear him laughing hysterically while watching his beloved Turner Classic Movie channel. Eternal rest grant unto him, oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.
