Mark Allen Smith, age 40, died unexpectedly on the morning of June 6, 2022. He was born on August 26, 1981 in Wichita, KS. He had been making progress in recovering from a major stroke, which was a result of COVID-19, in October 2020. After spending 329 days in hospitals and rehab facilities, he was able to come live at his parents’ home on August 31, 2021. His family is very thankful that his last nine months were able to be spent at home. He was given the opportunity to be a positive influence for his eight-year-old son, Payton. As Mark’s physical abilities increased, he would play ping pong with Payton as well as board games. They recently had learned to play Parcheesi and had good father-son interaction and hearty belly laughs. They held hands and prayed together, hoping that Dad would get like he used to be. Their prayer was answered as Mark’s body was made whole again.
Mark graduated from Southeast High School in 2000 and had obtained his Eagle Scout award in 1999. His scouting years provided many opportunities for new experiences including hiking at Philmont in New Mexico and sailing off the coast of Texas. He had been employed at Spirit Aerosystems as a sheetmetal mechanic, doing sealing work on the Boeing 737. He was able to get 10 years in before his stroke. Mark was a generous soul, some would say to a fault.
Mark is survived by his son, Payton; parents Debby and Roger Smith; brother Scott Smith and sister-in-law, Brianna; sister Molly Redinger and brother-in-law, Rodney; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sets of loving grandparents, Omer and Margie Smith and Max and Yvonne Hansen.
A memorial has been established for Mark’s young son. Cash or checks made out to Roger Smith, 10201 E Boxthorn St., Wichita, KS 67226, will be put aside to care for Payton’s future needs. Mark lived for his son and fought hard and endured much to be around for him.
A visitation will be held Sunday, June 12, from 2-4 pm. A celebration of his life will be Monday, June 13, at 2:30 pm. Both will be held at Cozine Life Events Center, 11500 E. 21st St. N., Wichita, KS. Share condolences at www.cozine.com. Services by Cozine Memorial Group-Cozine Life Events Center.
