Marilyn Hatfield

Hatfield, Marilyn Clare (Bednar) , 88, USD 259 English Teacher, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother and friend, passed January 20, 2019 surrounded by her loved ones.  A gathering with family and friends will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, January 27, with a memorial service following at 3:00 pm, both at Broadway Mortuary Chapel. She was born in Chicago on October 8, 1930 to the late Edward and Anne (Podman) Bednar. She attended Chicago’s St. Thomas Aquinas Dominican High School, Northwestern University and the University of New Mexico-Albuquerque before marrying Roger Clark Hatfield on April 25, 1951. They had two sons while living in Oklahoma City and Raytown, Missouri. The family moved to Hays, Kansas where Marilyn continued her studies at Fort Hays State University receiving her Bachelor’s Degree and Teaching Certification in 1968. They moved to Wichita in 1968 where Marilyn began her twenty-six year tenure with USD 259 teaching English at Hamilton Junior High, Hadley Junior High and Northwest High School. She held the position of Department Head for five years before retiring in Wichita. In retirement, Roger and Marilyn traveled with good friends to Ireland, England, Italy, Spain and Austria before Roger’s passing in 2013. She went to Genesis on West Central to exercise with her friends first thing every morning come rain or shine, attended every play, concert and event that involved her grandchildren and was a thoughtful, forward thinking and wise woman. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Ellen who was killed by a drunk driver at age 18 and sister, Phyllis (Bednar) Van Dieren. She is survived by sons, Roger (Gayle) Hatfield and Timothy (Chris) Hatfield, both of Wichita; grandchildren, Trevor (Christina) Hatfield, Sloan Hatfield, Grant Hatfield, Katie (Spencer) Gunzelman, Ben Hatfield; one great-grandson, Jon and numerous nieces and nephews.
