Judith “Sophia” Castrisos, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, entered eternal rest on January 3, 2025. Born on April 1, 1937, in Wichita, Kansas, to Kenneth and Evelyn Graham, Judie often joked about being an “April Fool,” though her life was anything but foolish. She was a woman of deep love, unwavering faith, and boundless devotion to her family.
Judie was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Dale Graham, her husband, Mike Castrisos, and her Grandson, Christopher Castrisos.
As a teenager, Judie began working at the Crown Uptown Theatre, where she met the love of her life, Mike Castrisos. Through Mike, she discovered Orthodoxy, a faith that became a cornerstone of her life. She was chrismated, at which time she was given St. Sophia as her patron saint. In their early years together, Judie found guidance and strength in Father John Mathewson, who helped her secure medical assistance for her parents during challenging times. With grace and resilience, Judie supported herself and her younger sister, Rosie, embodying selflessness and determination.
After their marriage on November 11, 1956, Judie and Mike prayed many years for a child, and through prayerful devotion were given a son, Jimmy (James).
After marrying Mike, Judie embraced the Castrisos family and its treasured traditions. She spent countless hours learning cherished Greek recipes passed down through generations from her mother-in-law, Ourania, who spoke little English. With patience and dedication, Judie meticulously documented each recipe, preserving a legacy of family and flavor. Her family adored her for her exceptional homemaking skills, which transformed every gathering into an unforgettable celebration. Her holiday tables, adorned with thoughtful touches, reflected her attention to detail and her deep commitment to bringing loved ones together. Each dish she served was more than a meal—it was a heartfelt tribute to her husband’s heritage and a celebration of enduring tradition. After Ourania passed, Judie carried these customs forward, hosting gatherings where her beautifully adorned table—complete with fresh flowers and glowing candles—became a symbol of love and faith.
Judie created a home that was a haven of warmth and joy. Holidays were magical - the air filled with the aroma of her favorite Estée Lauder perfume, Beautiful, her lovingly prepared dishes, and the laughter of her grandchildren. Her table was not just a place to eat but a sacred space where family bonds were strengthened and God’s presence was celebrated.
Judie’s life mirrored the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi. Just as Ruth cared for Naomi, Judie lovingly cared for Ourania in her later years, welcoming her into their home and tending to her with unparalleled devotion. From daily care to weekly trips to the beauty salon, Judie ensured that her mother-in-law’s final years were filled with dignity and love.
Judie left behind her sister, Roseanne (Richard) DeFillippo from Murrieta, California; Son, Dr. James (Rhonda) Castrisos; Granddaughter, Macrina (Andrew) Bayless and Great Granddaughter Emmelia Bayless; Grandson, Nicholas Castrisos; and countless acquaintances whose lives she held near to her heart and whom she touched with her heartfelt kindness.
Judie’s unwavering faith, boundless love, and tireless service to others defined her life. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and devotion that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with Christ the Savior Academy, 7515 E. 13th St., Wichita, KS 67206.
