Joyce Greene

July 31, 1925 — December 1, 2018

Mary Joyce Greene, 93, matriarch of the Malcolm E. Greene family, passed away, Saturday, December 1, 2018. She resided at the Wichita Presbyterian Manor where she was well cared for by the wonderful Manor staff and Heart & Soul Hospice. She was born on July 31, 1925 in Haydraw, South Dakota, the daughter of Belle and Cole Burton. She met Malcolm (Max) while working as a secretary at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. They were married April 21, 1946 in Rapid City, South Dakota and moved to Wichita in 1949 when Max took a position with the Wichita Public Works Department. Her activities included transcribing books and articles into Braille, pianist accompanist for various groups, Wichita Presbyterian Church bell choir and office assistant, Wichita Festivals Incorporated, Sedgwick County Zoo, Music Theatre of Wichita, and Sedgwick County election judge. Besides being a voracious reader, Joyce’s other interests which were enjoyed by extended family and friends included sewing, needle work, crochet, ceramics, canning fruits and vegetables, and loved cooking and baking (especially fruit pies and Boston Cream Pie which the grandkids loved). She also enjoyed attending Music Theatre and Wichita Symphony performances, EHU member through 4H, and traveling with Max around the world. She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm and her brother, Joe Burton and niece, Cindy Thompson both of Rapid City, South Dakota. Joyce is survived by: 3 children, Kay Kirtley (Norman, Oklahoma), Jan Myrick (Issaquah, Washington) and Mike Greene (Marie) (Wichita, Kansas); 4 grandchildren, Kristina Kirtley(Phil Crain) (New York City), Josh Myrick (Issaquah, WA), Shane Greene (Ashleigh), and Chris Greene (Wichita, KS) 4 great-grandchildren, Melia and Wesley Crain, Linnea and Perrin Greene, and sister-in-law, Margot Burton, niece, Tracey Burton-Trimble (John) and great nephews, Quinn and Conner Trimble all of Rapid City, South Dakota. Memorial Service will be 10:30 am, Friday, December 28, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church Chapel. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with Heart and Soul Hospice Wichita, 2414 N. Woodlawn Blvd., Wichita, KS 67220. Services by Broadway Mortuary.
