Joyce Maxine Fowler, was born January 23, 1938, to parents Reverend Jacob Clyde Fowler and Alice Marie Johnston Fowler in a blizzard on Sunday morning in Tulsa, Oklahoma's Morningside Hospital. Her grandfather waited until services were over and placed a call to her father in Braman, Oklahoma. After announcing the birth of a daughter, the phone went dead. Grandad always declared daddy fainted. Daddy said the operator hung up so she could call other churches and announce her birth. The following Sunday mom and daughter were in church, Joyce in her bassinet and Marie at the piano.
Joyce attended school at Benton, KS, Neosho, Missouri, Garden City, Missouri, and graduated from Osawatomie, KS High School, followed by one year of Ottawa University. She met her future husband in high school as a Freshman. They married one year after high school and moved to Manhattan so Howard could go to K-State. They had one daughter and two sons. They enjoyed camping as a family while living in St. Louis. Joyce went to Florissant Valley Community College and followed by five years as First Assistant to the Librarian at Ferguson Public Library. She moved to Wichita, KS in 1980, got her Legal Assistant degree and later her Bachelor's. Joyce retired in 1999 from the Ablah Library at WSU and finished her Bachelor's degree in 2000. Joyce accepted Christ at the age of 8. Her favorite verse was Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me." Her favorite hymn was "It Is Well With My Soul."
Joyce was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Fowler; parents, Clyde and Alice Marie Fowler. Survivors include her husband, Howard A. Barnes; son, Howard F. Barnes (Kathy); daughter, Natalie Joyce Douglas (Larry); son, Michael N. Barnes; brother, Ed Fowler; 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
