Josephine Rodman

Rodman, Josephine T, age 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield, Kansas. The family appreciates the care given to their mother at this facility. Josephine was born on February 3, 1921 in Sweetwater, TN. She was the first of six children born to Delta (Gent) and Glen Hugh Thomas. After high school, Josephine went to college for two years to become a teacher. After Pearl Harbor, Josephine enlisted in the Navy and served the United States as a WAVE, working with the Wartime National Bureau of Censorship as a long line cable censor. After WWII, Josephine married Mack Carter Rodman on November 11, 1945. Together, they continued Mack’s home building/construction business in California. They started a family and made their home in Lompoc, CA. In 1959 Mack and Josephine sold the construction business and moved their family to a farm near Foster, Missouri. All of the Rodman children grew up on this farm and graduated from Rich Hill High School. Josephine went back to school to study nursing and earned LPN certification. She worked at the Bates County Hospital in Butler, MO for several years. Josephine was preceded in death by her husband in 1984. In addition, Josephine was preceded in death by brother, Glen (“Bud”) Thomas of Trenton, MO; sisters, Delta (“Sunshine”) Perdue of Winston Salem, NC, Virginia (and husband Erskine) of Baker, Clanton, AL; brother-in-law, Ralph Stratton of Huntland, TN; and son-in-law, Ron Laird of Nevada City, CA. Survivors include brother, Frank (Carol) Thomas of Albany, MO; sister, Betty Stratton of Huntland, TN; sister-in-law, Mary Louise Thomas of Trenton, MO; her five children, Mack (Carol) Rodman of Rolla, MO; Dee Ono of Kona, Hawaii; Doris (Roger) Retzinger of Johnsonburg, PA; Elizabeth (Terry) Trimble of Wichita, KS and Ellen Laird of St. George, Utah; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and their families. Josephine will be buried beside her husband in the Fort Scott National Cemetery in Fort Scott, KS. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
