Miller, John Arnold, 87, retired minister with The Salvation Army, Promoted to Glory March 14, 2015. Born April 18, 1927, in Burlington, IA. to John and Freda (Maurer) Miller. Preceded in death by his parents, oldest sister Viola Donnelson, and beautiful daughters, Joy and Dawn. Survivors: Twin brother and sister, Ernest Miller and Erma Jones, his loving wife Catherine of 65 years, two outstanding sons and daughter in laws (dads requested wording) Timothy (Barbara) and Steven (Nena), eleven grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, Beatrice VanAltena, from Switzerland, JongKyu Kim from South Korea and others close like family who lived in their home for a season. He unconditionally loved, prayed and cared for family, friends and countless strangers. His life reflected The Salvation Army motto, “Heart to God, Hand to Man.” A man of prayer he believed God could do the impossible, especially for people’s lives to be delivered and transformed from emptiness, abuse, alcohol and drug addiction. The family has compiled a book of remembrance full of letters sent from transformed lives. Talking about success he said, “We are not to take credit, but it is because of what God has done.” A daily student of the Bible, he saw God’s Word as alive and relevant for today, able to impact every part of one’s life for the better. He desired everyone to know Jesus as their savior, close friend and guide for their life. This passion extended to countries around the globe with faithful support through prayers, gifts, words of encouragement and personal visits, traveling with family members to Africa, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East. Extended family continue to love God and people as well as do missionary work in Far East Asia and other parts of the world. Together with his wife they ministered full time for 41 plus years, serving in Dubuque, Charles City and Newton, IA, North Side, Wellston, and Temple Corps in St. Louis, MO. Then serving 8 years as City Commanders in Wichita, KS, pastoring the Citadel Corps, overseeing community services for the poor, The Salvation Army Camp Hiawatha, Mens Social Adult Rehabilitation Center and Biddy Basketball.
