James Haig Harton, 79, passed away Friday, June 23, 2017. Jim was the oldest child of James and Rae Harton, born in Los Angeles, California. He graduated From Woodrow Wilson High School, attended USC where he received his B.S. in Geology and his Masters in Petroleum Engineering. After starting to work for a large oil company in Texas, Jim took further training in using computers in his field. He worked for the company for several years and then was sent to Scotland for a period of time. After returning to the States, he started his own consulting business and wrote prospects for oil companies in Kansas. Jim loved to gather for dinner with family and friends and play games. He enjoyed reading science fiction, mysteries, and cooking Armenian dishes taught to him by his mother. Most of all he loved to fish. Jim fished all over the Western United States and in later years enjoyed fishing with his brother Bob at local lakes and ponds. He is survived by his brothers, Robert (Diane) Harton and Richard Harton; sister, Gail Conwell; nieces, Amy Morrell and Sarah (Doug) DeGroot; nephew, Br. Leven Harton OSB; great niece, Lauren; great-nephews, Matthew, Caleb, and Joshua. He will be missed by all his loving family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 7, at 10am, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 645 N. 119th St. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Benedict’s Abbey, 1020 N. 2nd St., Atchison, KS 66002.
