IeeNee Yoon

May 10, 1925 — September 5, 2018

IeeNee Yoon, 93, passed away September 5, 2018.  He was born to Bae Yoon and Joo Sick Min on May 10, 1925 in Inchon, (South) Korea.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Gillispie) Yoon, daughters, Ruth Yoon (Eugene Little) and Patty Yoon.

During the Korean War, he served as interpreter for the US Navy on board the Admiral's flagships as he spoke Korean, Japanese, English and some Chinese.  He came to the US in 1952. His undergraduate work was at Lynchburg College; his graduate studies were at the University of Minnesota, where he completed his Ph.D. in Economics in 1967.  He married Marilyn in 1960, and in the next few years they welcomed their two daughters. Dr. Yoon taught Economics at Culver-Stockton College, Canton, MO. At Wichita State University he taught for 27 years, with a special emphasis on macro-economics and the Pacific Rim.  He co-founded the Wichita Asian Association in 1980 to promote Asian cultural awareness in Wichita. He helped start the Wichita Asian Festival, an annual event which shares Asian culture and food with the local community.  In 1983, he co-founded the Wichita Indochinese Center to assist southeast Asian refugees with resettlement. WIC continues today to serve immigrants and refugees from many countries. In retirement, he enjoyed golf, oil painting, travel, and other activities.

A Memorial Service will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, September 15th at Pine Valley Christian Church, 5620 E. 21st N.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Wichita Public Library or Pine Valley Christian Church. Arrangements by Broadway Mortuary.
