Manning, Helen Elaine, 79, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016. Visitation 6-8:00pm, Friday, Broadway Mortuary. Funeral service 10:30am, Saturday, Calvary United Methodist Church. Helen was born in Creston, Iowa at her grandmother’s home on November 2nd 1936, the ninth of ten children to Earl and Gladys Carns. The family lived in Cromwell, IA, later moving to Afton, IA and in 1949 to Murray, IA where Helen graduated from High School in 1955. The following year she attended Central College in Pella, IA. She spent the summer of 1956 with her family in Wichita, KS where her father, a heavy equipment operator, had taken a job working on the “big ditch” project. Helen took a job at the lunch counter of a small drugstore near where they were living for the summer, there she met her future husband Bill Manning, who regularly stopped in for a cup of coffee in the evenings. That fall the Carns family moved back to Iowa, and Helen worked as a key punch operator in Des Moines. Bill spent the next year and a half on long distance dates and on June 14th of 1958 they were married in Helen’s home town at the Methodist Church and have lived in Wichita since. She is survived by husband, Bill and sons Scott (Andy) of Lewisburg, PA, and Mark (Laura) of Wichita, KS, and grandchildren Kelsey, Jennifer, and Parker, three sisters, Lucille, of Bend, Oregon, and Louise, of McMinnville, Oregon, and JoAnn (George) DeMoss of Des Moines, IA. Helen was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers and sisters, Juanita, Opal, Eldon, James, David, and Larry. Helen was a member of the Eastern Star and a Past President of the Social Order of the Beauseant. Memorials to Calvary United Methodist Church. Share condolences at www.CozineMemorial.com.
