Hans Georg Gran, 79, retired chef, passed away peacefully at home, Oct. 18, 2017. Born on Sept. 4, 1938, in Kerpen-Horrem, Germany. He is survived by his son, Dieter Gran; daughter, Angela (Victor) Libby; grandchildren, Ashley Kortkamp and Briar Libby, all of Wichita. Niece, Silke Fassbender; nephew, Thomas Gran, and their families, both of Germany. Georg was the youngest of three sons born to Fritz and Frederike Gran. As an apprentice in Germany, he started studying cooking at the age of 14, and by 17, he graduated second in his class for Culinary Arts and began working at a large hotel as a sous-chef. The young chef had a huge ambition for traveling the world and began his long journey across the ocean to America. With many stops along the way, Georg was able to survive with the one skill he had trained so hard for. The final leg of his journey would have him settle in Wichita, Kansas on a work visa. Soon after he married Marilyn Allan on April 18, 1966. During this time Marilyn was able to teach Georg to read and write English fluently and in 1984 became a Naturalized Citizen of the United States of America. In all of his 79 years, Georg never learned to drive, so he relied on Marilyn to drive him to work and daily errands until her death in 2005. His children soon took over roll of driver and care givers until his passing. Not only did he share a passion for food and entertaining, he had an undying commitment to provide for his family. To honor and celebrate his life, a memorial service will be held on Monday, Oct. 23, at Broadway Mortuary Chapel at 2:00 p.m.
