Glen LeRoy Shurtz, 84, was born on July 14th, 1940 in Winfield, KS. He lived in Gueda Springs for 6 years, Moline for 3 years, then settled in Ark City, KS. He attended school and worked on the farm throughout his childhood.
He graduated from Ark City High School and then began his college career. He attended Kansas State University where he graduated with three Engineering degrees, a BS in Mechanical (1963), a BS in Electrical (1964), and a MS in Electrical (1966). He chose to continue his education at SMU where he obtained two additional Engineering degrees, a PhD in Electrical (1971) and a MS in Biomedical (1975). He utilized his engineering expertise by working at IBM in Rochester, MN (1964-1966) and at Texas Instruments in Dallas, TX (1966-1975), where he performed managerial and technical engineering assignments involving research and development of guidance and control, communication, and computer systems. He completed his college career at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX where he was granted a MD in 1978.
He chose to complete his Diagnostic Radiology Residency at the University of Oklahoma (1978-1982), during which he also worked for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in DC (1981). Following completion of his residency he moved to Wichita, KS to practice. He was a partner at Wesley Radiology Group for almost 20 years, before becoming an Independent Interventional Radiologist.
He met his wife, Janet, when he was 12 years old while attending school in Ark City. They had their first date at a "Sadie Hawkins" dance in the Junior Dance Club in 1953. They were married on December 30th, 1962 at 1st Presbyterian Church in Arkansas City, KS. They had four children; Tiffany, Todd, Amy, and Amber.
Glen was a very driven, intelligent, and hardworking man. He was happiest when he was outside on his tractors, working with his farm equipment, or washing his cars.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Shurtz; his children, Tiffany Shurtz of Frisco, TX, Todd Shurtz (Beth) of Keller, TX, Amy Dvorak (Ed) of Vancleave, MS, and Amber Mattke (Ryan) of Augusta, KS; his grandchildren Kevin and Grant Shurtz, Drew, Jake, and Lily Dvorak, and Rylie, Saylor, Jens, and Rhett Mattke; and his brother, Virgil Joe Shurtz. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Eugene Shurtz, his mother, Elizabeth Josephine Bricker Shurtz, and his brother Harold Leon Shurtz.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, August 17th at the Benton Church, 14300 SW 20th Street, Benton, KS 67017.
A special thanks to all the healthcare professionals that cared for "Doc" in the past years at Chisholm Place Memory Care and Good Shepherd Hospice.
