Evelyn Terry

October 25, 1923 — October 12, 2016

Evelyn Ruth Terry, 92, went home to be with the Lord on October 12, 2016 in Wichita Kansas. She was born on October 25, 1923 in Buhler Kansas, the youngest of seven siblings. Evelyn was part of her high school band and loved to roller skate. On one roller skating outing in Newton, Kansas, a young man bumped her in the skating rink and knocked her down. He skated around to her and helped her up. That young man was Roy Terry. Roy Terry was inducted into the Army during WWII. Before going overseas, Roy was stationed in Texas. Evelyn traveled to Texas to be with him and on August 30, 1942 she was married to Edgar "Roy" Terry by Rev. L.C. Beasley in Austin, TX. at First Methodist Church. He later was sent overseas to serve in the United States Army in World War II. While Roy was in the Army, Evelyn gave birth to their son Edgar John. Evelyn was always a caring person and willing to help those in need. For example, while Roy was in the Army, Evelyn and Roy were living in a small one bedroom apartment when Johnny and Laura Penner needed a place to stay. Evelyn and Roy let them use their bedroom and they slept in the kitchen. Evelyn liked to play the piano at home. She was also an excellent gardener and loved to grow flowers. In their home on Waco Street, they had a garden area built into their family room. Evelyn was an excellent cook. One of her specialties was chicken and noodles. She always wore an apron because she spent a lot of time in the kitchen. She always liked to get together with her siblings at Hilda and Waldo's farm for special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas. They always enjoyed sitting around the big dining room table and visiting. There were always many stories to share and lots of laughter. Evelyn was a long time member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She was involved with the Women's Missionary Union and was a Sunday School teacher for the 4 year olds several years. Evelyn is preceded in death by her dear husband of 66 years, her parents William and Susie Nachtigal, three brothers, Arnold, Eldo, and Harlow Nachtigal and three sisters, Hilda Harms, Helen Kaiser, and Laura Penner. She is survived by son, Ed Terry; daughter, Marilyn Thames (Tim); grandchildren, Minette and Matthew Thames; Tracy Terry, and Julie Rains; great-grandchildren, Todd, Tanner, Morgan, Mandi, Caroline, Caleigh, Abbie, and Ty; and great-great-grandchild, Grayson.
