Emily Derby Bump, fondly known as Emmy, was born on March 27, 1946, in Wichita, Kansas, where she spent her life leaving a remarkable legacy of joy and love. She passed away peacefully on November 7, 2024, at the age of 78.
Emmy was a devoted Christian whose faith in the Lord was a central part of her daily life. She was a beacon of positivity, making a lasting impression on everyone she met. Her joyful spirit was not just contagious; it became the cornerstone of who she was. An unwavering cheerleader for her beloved family and friends, she had a unique talent for turning any occasion into a celebration. From leading lively hula dances at her granddaughter’s Hawaiian themed bridal shower to penning lyrics for custom kazoo ensembles, Emmy embraced life with an exuberance that warmed the hearts of those around her.
A proud graduate of the Class of ’64 from East High School, she also became a sister of Pi Beta Phi while attending the University of Oklahoma. Her virtues of gratitude and a steadfast commitment to family guided her throughout her life, nurturing deep connections and enriching the lives of those fortunate enough to know her.
In her personal life, Emmy cherished many adventures with her best friend and husband, Phil Bump. Together, they cultivated a beautiful, retired life shared between their cabin in Estes Park and their home in Wichita. For nearly two decades, they delighted in treating their loved ones to hikes and picnics in Rocky Mountain National Park, offering friends and family the joy of feeding chipmunks, witnessing wildlife, savoring s'mores over campfires, enjoying concerts in the park, rodeos, and watching parades down Elkhorn Avenue. These memories are a testament to the love she poured into every moment spent with her family.
Emmy is survived by her beloved husband, Phil; her cherished children Debbie Wahlenmaier (Troy), Darcy Graves (Zac), John Bump, and Emily Fromm (Tim); and her adored grandchildren Kelsey Kinney (Tucker), Jack Wahlenmaier, Ryan Wahlenmaier, Maria Graves, Anastasia Graves, Charles Fromm, Paige Fromm, and Alexis Fromm. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Barbara Derby and niece and nephew Katy Young (Dan) and John Derby.
She was preceded in death by her mother Virginia “Ginger” Ewers Derby, father Arch Leon “Bud” Derby, and brother Al Derby, each of whom she cherished deeply.
Emmy's memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her.
