Edward Starkey

Edward Lewis Starkey, 78, passed away July 18, 2019. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, July 29, 2019 at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Wichita Kansas. Ed was born on February 11, 1941 in Enid, Oklahoma to Ernest and Julia Smith.  At 6 years old, he was adopted by his stepfather Victor Starkey.  He was raised and lived in Guymon, Oklahoma.  On September 4th, 1960, he married the love of his life Jaxine Nosler.  Their marriage lasted 58 years and resulted in three children, Timothy Edward, Jerry Lee, and Amy Jo.  In 1973 the family moved to Hugoton, Kansas where Ed was Postmaster until his retirement in 1996.  He also served in the United States Army Reserves from 1959 through 1965.  In total he served his country in the military and in civil service for 37 years.

Throughout the years, Ed was very active in several Methodist churches, teaching Adult Sunday School classes, singing in the choir, serving on the church board, serving as a lay speaker, volunteering with senior ministries as a van driver, and just being a friendly face to everyone he saw.  He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening, fishing, hiking, construction, remodeling and working on the family cabin in Colorado.  In the later years, Ed and Jaxine spent summers in Colorado and winters in Wichita, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by parents, Victor and Julia Starkey. Survivors include his loving wife, Jaxine Starkey; children, Tim (Terri) Starkey, Jerry (Angie) Starkey, and Amy (Duane) Johnson; sister, Millie Jones (Tony Stephens); brothers, Mike (Liz) Starkey and Doug (Alane) Smith; grandchildren, Tobi (Levi) Bratten, Timara (Trey) Stelling, Tesica Starkey, Trenton Starkey, Cole (Tristen) Starkey, Brittany Starkey, Drew (Anna) Johnson, Kendra (Elliott) Riest, Caleb (Carlie) Johnson, Hannah, Bethany, Jared, and James Johnson; great-grandchildren, Lydia, Silas, and Josiah Bratten; Matthew, and Lilah Riest; and numerous nieces and nephews.
