Dr. Phillip DDS

October 23, 1934 — November 17, 2016

Barkett, DDS, Dr. Phillip G., 82, died November 17, 2016. Trisagion and Funeral Service 7:00 pm, Tuesday, at St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral. Burial 11:00 am, Wednesday, at Old Mission Cemetery. Born in the small town of Buffalo, Oklahoma, Phil went on to attend college at the University of Oklahoma for his undergraduate degree. He then went on to dental school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Dental School. Always a hard worker, Phil started working on the Oklahoma Highway when he was 14 years old. He continued his hard work throughout his long 40-year career as a dentist. Phil moved to Wichita after dental school and opened his practice on Emporia Street behind St. Francis. His practice was a great source of pride for him. He started work at 7:00 am and finished at 6:00 pm. He would return home at night and immediately sit down to call the patients that he had performed a procedure on that day. His patients, and the wonderful women on his staff, were family to him. Even though he worked hard, family came first for Phil. He spent all of his holidays surrounded by his beloved mother, beloved brother and sisters and their beautiful children. Later in life, Phil expanded his family of 2 children tenfold, when he married the love of his life, Julie Gillum. They were happily married for over 23 years. Together, they spent many lovely summers at Grand Lake, where Phil would drive one of his many fast boats around the lake and then sit on the deck drinking wine. There was always a constant stream of family and friends coming to see them at the lake. He loved his grandson, August, and wanted to give him the world. Phil savored every day of his life and every meal of his life. He was known for driving 3 1/2 hours for tomatoes, corn or fresh fish. Phil was a long-time member, and former member, of various organizations such as: Chaine des Rotisseurs, Bulls and Bears Investment Club, Grumpy Old Men and Wichita Wagonmasters. Phil, with his amazing presence and handsome face, will be missed every day by those who knew him and loved him. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Selway Barkett; brothers, Milton Barkett and Howard Barkett; and sisters, Marquita Farha, Gloria Barkett and Vickie Griffith. He is survived by his wife, Julie Barkett; son, Gacin (Jonathan) Barkett of New York City, NY; daughter, Claire (Michael) Boland of Califon, NJ - both from his first wife, Kathleen Thomas; brother, Tony Barkett of Wichita; and grandson, August Phillip Boland of Califon, NJ; stepson, J.
