Dr. James Mershon

December 18, 1937 — March 19, 2019

Dr. James C. Mershon , 81, beloved husband and father, entered eternal life on March 19, 2019 in Wichita, KS. Born on Dec. 18, 1937 to Dr. Clinton and Constance Mershon in Des Moines, IA, Jim graduated high school in Adel, IA, then went to the University of Iowa where he completed undergraduate studies and medical school in 1963. Following residency, he entered the Army in 1968 as a major in Aurora, Colorado where he taught cutting-edge heart catheterization techniques for which he received the Army Commendation Award.

Jim married Beverly, the love of his life, in July 1961. Together they parented 3 children, Philip (Wichita, KS), Susan (Green Bay, WI), and David (Dallas, TX). Jim is survived by his wife, children, and 7 grandchildren.

A man of quiet eloquence and a true gentleman, Dr. Mershon also held a wry sense of humor. He kidded with patients, nurses, pastors, friends, and family alike, making it difficult to tell his dry jokes and his sincere sentiments apart.

He jokingly admitted that he became a cardiologist because he wasn’t smart enough to be a general practitioner; he could never remember everything. Through this chosen discipline, he saved and improved the lives of thousands of people. He loved to help, teach, and mentor his patients and friends. His mantra was “make it better.” His dedication to his profession also earned him opportunities to serve as president of the Kansas Heart Association and the Wichita area Christian Medical Society.

Moving to Wichita, KS in 1970, Jim quickly adopted a new hometown. Over the years he became enamored by the history of Wichita, the state of Kansas, and his own genealogy with the Mershon Association. He frequently lectured at Wichita State, the Wichita Historical Society and various clubs, many of which he also chose to support with his generous heart and frequent philanthropy.

While medicine occupied Jim’s full attention during his busy career, he always found time for hobbies. Starting with antique medicine bottles, his interests grew into walking sticks and eventually the passion he’s most known for: Packards. He owned three classic Packards and was an active leader in the Great Plains Packard Club.

Jim grew up the son of devout Christian parents and his grandfather was a missionary from England to Newfoundland who eventually settled in Wisconsin. Faith was central to Jim’s beliefs and way of life. He contributed generously to many causes, served as a deacon, elder, and faithful choir member at his church, Eastminster Presbyterian, and actively mentored numerous young men.

Jim will be missed by family, friends, and colleagues whom he impacted in many ways, but his legacy lives on and will be felt for generations to come. Now we celebrate the life he lived so well and rejoice that he enjoys eternal life with his savior, Jesus Christ.
