Dorothy “Dot” Smith Shannon, 93, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2024. Dot was born in 1931 in Mobile, AL. She graduated from Murphy High School and attended Graceland College in 1949. In 1951, she married her college sweetheart. 

Dot enthusiastically supported the Wichita Art Museum and Botanica the Wichita Gardens. In addition, she was a devout Christian. She was passionate about art, music, and literature. She loved to travel and spend time with her friends and family (especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren). 

She was preceded in death by her parents Francis Earl Smith, Sr. and Elsie Mader Smith; her husband Dwayne Hull Shannon, son Gary Dwayne Shannon, brother Francis Earl Smith, Jr., and sister Carole S Phillpott. 

She is survived by her brother, Francis M Smith (Mary Lou Smith) of Mobile; son, Ken (Jan) Shannon of Wichita; daughter, Karen Shannon (Tamrat Tademe) of Minneapolis; grandchildren David (Kirsten) Shannon, Julie (John) Melhorn, Besufekad (Eden Tekle) Shannon-Tamrat; Selamawit (Stephen Nuah) Shannon-Tamrat and Sisay Shannon-Tamrat, and nine great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 16, at 1:00 p.m., at the Cozine Life Events Center, 11500 E 21st St N, Wichita, KS 67206. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Wichita Art Museum, 1400 Museum Blvd, Wichita, KS 67203 and/or Botanica, The Wichita Gardens, 701 Amidon St, Wichita, KS 67203.
