Donald D. Salmen, 94, retired Southwestern Bell Engineer and United States Army Veteran, was born May 3, 1923 in Bonesteel, SD, and passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2017 in Wichita, KS. Donald wrote his own obituary which said: “I have gone to join my two most precious gifts; my wife and son in our Heavenly home. Both have preceded me in death as have my father, mother, sister, and brother.I will miss the sharing and love that I have experienced on earth as a working man, a U.S. soldier, and as a retiree. Maybe a new job awaits me. I hope so. God Knows best.” Donald served in the United States Army as a Military Policeman for 17 months in the European Theatre of Operations with an infantry regiment and military police company. Some of his duties included maintaining speed and traffic regulations, making arrests for violations, investigating black market activities and working in cooperation with Counter Intelligence. He participated in the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Nebraska, completing Terms I and II. He received the Pistol Expert Medal, Rifle Expert Medal, Carbine Expert Medal, the Expert Infantryman Badge, American Theatre Service Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Service Ribbon, with one Bronze Battle Star, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
