Brandon Scott Hughes was loved by everybody who ever encountered him.
From childhood, he radiated coolness and confidence, and people were compelled to him. So many of us will never forget that look he would give his friends when they did something silly or dumb. That look was worth a thousand words.
He was an athlete, breaking track records, and going on to play basketball at the collegiate level.
He was cool, calm, collected, and thoughtful. When presented with a problem, he would say “hmmmmmmmm” and then ask the appropriate follow-up questions to get to a meaningful conclusion.
This same skill allowed him to be an incredible friend and confidant. You could talk to him about what was going on in your life, and he could certainly be trusted with a secret, but he would question you and push you to make sure you were proceeding with integrity. If you needed some comedic relief to distract you from a stressful situation, Brandon was able to sense that and somehow knew exactly what you needed.
Once you became his friend, you were stuck with him. He didn’t take his relationships for granted. If it weren’t a phone call to chat and ask you about your job, then it would be a silly text of a gif or meme just to keep your relationship engaged.
He was fun. He was so fun. His jokes would go on for years and would often come at completely unexpected times. He was the life of every party. He concocted endless schemes that he fabricated out of thin air, and he once got invited to the weddings of three different strangers over the course of a single evening.
He was an insanely good conversationalist. He could talk on the phone for hours. When he met the significant other of a friend for the first time, he would ask every question in the book but in a way that didn’t feel even remotely invasive.
An under-appreciated fact about Brandon: he was the best damned lens technician that the city of Wichita ever saw. The time he spent making knives with his grandfather as a kid clearly rubbed off on him. He didn’t just have a job – he had a craft. And his work ethic was rivaled by none.
He was a model father. He somehow managed to have an endearing friendship with Brooklyn while consistently laying down the rules and leading her in the right direction. The proof is in the pudding. He raised an incredible daughter who is brilliant, thoughtful, funny, and has that same charismatic quirkiness that made her father so loveable.
Brandon left a lasting impression on every person who ever met him. His untimely death doesn’t just affect his friends and family members; but rather, it’s a regional tragedy. He was loved by so many, and that love was always fully reciprocated. The world lost a true gem last weekend, and the hole that is created by that loss will endure indefinitely. Brandon will be missed.
